Quakes news wrap
We've been busy lately with a project that readers of the blog will find quite interesting, so we're going to keep it short and sweet today. Here's the latest:
- The Quakes are training at Home Depot Center in LA, along with the Galaxy, Chivas USA, and
the MetroStarsRed Bull New York. Mercury News reporter Elliott Almond is concerned about what he sees as a missed "local marketing opportunity;" Quakes GM John Doyle says, essentially, that when he was a player, the team had to walk uphill through three feet of snow to get to practice so this shouldn't be a hardship. In any case, the team's new training field at Santa Clara University should be done before too long. (Doyle's right, by the way. HDC has great practice facilities and allows for the potential for scrimmages against the other teams there, which is a good thing for a side with a small roster like the Quakes.) - The MLS schedule will be released Thursday, according to several sources.
- City on a Hill Press has a story on the Quakes' top Supplemental Draft pick Adam Smarte.
- Former USWNT and Los Altos High star Lorrie Fair is playing with Chelsea's women's team, which allows us to pass along a London restaurant recommendation: Wagamama.
- The folks in San Luis Obispo are excited about the upcoming exhibition games there with the Quakes, DC United, and the Crew.
- Make that "really excited." They're even doing stories about it on the TV news.
- If you're looking for the full Quakes pre-season schedule, you can find it here.
In other news, former Quake Junior Agogo is Ghana's hero at the African Cup of Nations, San Jose State's Ismael Ibarra was drafted by the California Cougars, and the team of investors pursuing an MLS expansion team for Philadephia have nailed down their stadium financing, which makes them the strongest candidate for 2010.
