Quakes to open season against Red Bull?

Ives Galarcep of the New Jersey Herald News reports that the Quakes will open their 2008 campaign against Red Bull New York on Saturday, March 29 at Buck Shaw Stadium.

This is actually different from what our sources have told us in the past, but it's possible that things have changed since then. If so, we can hear the chants beginning already: "You'll always be the Metros! You'll always be the Metros!"

It's excellent that neither LA nor Houston was selected as the San Jose Earthquakes' first opponent at home in 2008!

The first home meeting with either of those two teams will be a sellout or a near-sellout (considering that it'll likely be played at McAfee Coliseum) anyway, so why waste a Home Opener that'll sell out regardless of who the visiting opponent is on either of them?

New York Red Bull is a good choice as the first visiting opponent since the Earthquakes will have a better chance to beat them or at least play a pretty close game with them. Even more importantly, RBNY emits no emotional resonance for Quakes fans (unlike LA and Houston), thus allowing the Return of the San Jose Earthquakes to be the story of the Home Opener without anything else overshadowing it.

Guy's right re: opening against a team where there's no emotional ties. Plus, we get to see a world class forward in Juan Pablo Angel at our 1st Earthquakes game in 2 year! But let's grow up re: NYRB vs MetroStars:
1) we're not the Clash, they're not the MEtroStars,
2) MLS _and_ NY's stadium are better off with Red Bull's investment
3) why would we EVER bring up a team's former name if it was associated with AEG?

Congrats to both the Quakes & NYRB for being free of AEG!
