Sports Illustrated: Quakes/Galaxy among five best rivalries in world soccer
Sports Illustrated columnist Jonah Freedman took a look at soccer rivalries around the world and came up with his list of the top five:
- Real Madrid vs. FC Barcelona (Spain)
- AC Milan vs. Inter Milan (Italy)
- Arsenal vs. Tottenham (England)
- Rangers vs. Celtic (Scotland)
- San Jose Earthquakes vs. L.A. Galaxy

That's all well and good. But patting on the back aside, I can't believe he would put Earthquakes - Galaxy rivalry ahead of the hatred between Boca Juniors and River Plate. Nothing, I mean, nothing in the Earthquakes - Galaxy comes close to the bad blood in their rivalry. The Landon Donovan pin~ata stuff we did was like child's play over there. Anyway, it's good to see our rivalry getting on the radar screen. Objectively, it's nowhere in the top 5 in the world. I would maybe put it in the top 15 to 20.

I think it's pretty cool we get a mention, but I agree, Boca-River has to be in the top five. I'd also like to think Liverpool-ManU is up there too. But I think Landycakes going to LA took this rivalry to another level. It was already good. And then it got great.
The League would be stupid to kill it in the interest of claimed short term economic benefits

What this really means is that we are without question the most intriguing matchup in the US....Obviously we could name 5 or 10 matchups in every one of those nations and South America IS on another level...and what about Mexican rivalries? Frankly Watford V Luton (English "Championship" one nnotch below the Prem) has more BAD BLOOD than San Jose V LA....
BUT we have had a lot of great matches and 4 championships in the last 5 years....
It helps my whole attitude towards this rivalry that the LA Riot Squad is filled with such excellent folk who I yelled at all MLS Cup BUT who are tremendous fans and damn fun to party with! We tried to solve the world's problems the night before the Cup but we'll just have to make due with the best rivalry in US Soccer...Tommy! Tally! You guys rock! and Cobi Jones? We shouted "F*** Off" at him and he still smiled and reached out to us....damn! He pisses me off but I have one word for him...CONSUMATE CHAMPION!...ahh TWO WORDS!!! CONSUMATE PROFESSIONAL CHAMPION... THREE! THREE WORDS!!! HARD WORKING CONSUMATE PROFESSIONAL CHAMPION....OUR CHIEF WEAPON IS FEAR and SURPRISE! OUR TWO CHIEF WEAPONS ARE....Monty Python...I can't help it!!! CONGRATS GALAXY!

At this point I think Los Angeles/San Jose has become one of the top three world football rivalries. You want clubs that have history, and San Jose was around during the days of the mighty Cosmos even if Los Angeles just got founded in 1996.And Spartan Stadium is a very old and storied football ground as well.George Best played there for San Jose. The atmosphere in both stadiums is some of the best in the world......I personally am a diehard MetroStars fan with a passionate hatred for D.C.United.I just really enjoy watching these two clubs(Los Angeles/San Jose)jaw it out-without me taking sides in the rivalry.

What determines the greatness of rivalry? If the only criterion is the quality of the players and teams then 1, 2, and 3 should be ok. In my opinion besides quality of the players and teams intensity of competition between players and fans must also be considered. I would suggest Galatasaray-Fenerbahce, Celtic-Rangers, Olympiakos-Panathinaikos Boca Juniors-River Plate be in the top 5
